Youth Links
We have a link with the Brownies and Guides in our area and a group of Girl Scouts in Kausaltar, a village near Kathmandu. The groups correspond on a regular basis. People who go to Nepal either for a personal holiday or with charity work to do, act as postmen. This ensures a regular and definite exchange of letters where postal services are rather hit and miss.
The young people in Nepal who go to school learn English. This exchange gives them the opportunity to improve their English and our children an insight into the customs and daily life in a third world country. Our girls regularly raise money to help their Nepalese pen-friends who in turn have shown the true universal Guiding spirit by helping, medically, their villagers that have even less than they have. They held a Health Camp in their area. This involves a volunteer doctor coming to the area, giving free examinations and the Girl Scouts paid for any medicines that were required.
What unselfishness from youth in both countries!!!
Who says that the young people of today do not know how to behave???
Jack was here in 2006 and met the Brownies. In 2008 when he was here, he had a working day with them to help them earn their International badges. They made models of a typical village house, drums and masks. They learnt a few Nepalese phrases and numbers. They cooked and ate a Nepalese meal together. They had the same choices that their pen-friends have - a lot of rice with a small portion of vegetables, or a small portion of vegetables with a lot of of rice. None of us fancied that for every meal.
While Jack was here, he worked along with us at fund raising events and met a great number of our British and Dutch supporters. All these things have led to a good personal and working relationship with our friends in Nepal. Long may these links continue to flourish.
