2010 Health Camp
A visit to a hospital is out of the question to most village people because of the distance they often have to travel and the cost of the treament, if they get there. To remedy this we can arrange a 'Health Camp' which is a means of taking a bit of the hospital to the village. Nepalese or sometimes Overseas doctors give their time voluntarily and we pay for all the medicines that are used.
We arranged for 2 Nepalese gynaecologists and their nurses to spend 2 days at our Health Post. The local school was converted into a mini-hospiatal and 185 women from a large area were examined. Their ages ranged from 30-60 years of age. Most of their problems occur after their children are born, usually on the floor of their home with no medical help available before, during or after the birth. They then return to normal work almost immediately.
All the women were given advice and help with problems, mostly prolapses. Fifteen women were advised that a hysterectomy was reccommended. These would be performed free of charge for them. Seven of these procedures have already been carried out. The other 8 are very nervous of having an operation but when they see how successfully the others have been treated, I hope they will change their minds.
Our resident nurse has learned a lot from the visiting doctors and some of the procedures she can now carry out as part of the health care that we offer in our Health Post.
